Successful ozone treatments for mold removal

Mold growth in homes and buildings causes several health issues like allergies, asthma attacks, and respiratory problems. Mold spores float unseen in indoor air and when inhaled, can trigger reactions in sensitive individuals.  Ozone treatment is one of the most powerful weapons against household mold. Ozone generators produce ozone – a highly reactive gas made of three oxygen atoms (O3). When applied correctly, ozone breaks down the cell walls and DNA of mold spores, rendering them inert.

Tips for effective ozone treatments

1. Test for mold species

Before applying ozone, it’s wise to get professional mold testing done first. This way, you’ll know exactly what type of mold species you’re dealing with and how extensive the contamination is. Professional mold inspectors take air and surface samples to identify the mold. Damage Control when things go wrong, swift and strategic action can mitigate the fallout.

2. Find and fix the moisture source

For any mold treatment to be effective long-term, you must address the underlying moisture issue that allowed the mold to grow in the first place. Look for water leaks, high humidity, condensation, flooding, etc. Repair plumbing, improve ventilation, or take other steps to keep the area dry.

3. Contain the affected area

Close off the moldy rooms from the rest of the home. Turn off HVAC systems that connect to other areas of the house. It stops mold spores from circulating and contaminating unaffected areas during ozone treatment. Plastic sheeting and tarps help create a temporary seal.

4. Remove or cover belongings

Take any furniture, rugs, curtains, clothes, and other items out of the treatment area ozone damage and discolored materials. Alternatively, cover or seal items with plastic sheeting to protect them.

5. Seal vents, chimneys, and gaps

Read and follow the ozone generator’s instructions for safe operation and ventilation times. Most systems run for a specified period and then require 8-24 hours of venting with fans to purge the ozone gas. Running the generator too long overexposes people and damage materials.

7. Use fans to circulate ozone

Place fans inside the treatment area to help circulate the ozone throughout the space and into every nook and crevice. It ensures full exposure to the mold. A fan also helps purge the ozone later.

8. Maintain proper humidity

During and after remediation, keeps the relative humidity below 50% using dehumidifiers. High humidity allows leftover mold to regrow. Proper humidity makes it harder for mold to thrive.

9. Follow up with disinfecting

After ozone treatment, do a final clean of the treatment area using detergent and products containing antimicrobial ingredients like chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or tea tree oil. It provides additional disinfecting power against any remaining mold.

10. Check for leaks afterward

In the weeks following ozone treatment, periodically check the area for any new moisture or leaks. Catching and fixing such issues right away prevents the mold from returning. Be vigilant about keeping the area dry.
